Your student password was never meant to be a group project.
But that's exactly what it becomes every time students from different universities team up on shared coursework.
A group project brings students from different institutions together. They agree to meet at one campus to actually work, same room, same whiteboard, easier than trying to coordinate over a call. One of them doesn't have an account there, so a friend does what feels like the obvious fix: hands over their own student number and password so the visitor can get online and pull up the shared files.
It feels harmless. It is not.
That password is often the same one protecting their student portal, their email, sometimes their banking apps too, because most people reuse passwords more than they'd like to admit. Now a second person, on a different device, has it. If that visitor's phone is compromised, or they log in from somewhere unsafe, or they simply forget to log out, the actual account owner is the one exposed, with no idea it happened.
And if that shared account does anything that breaks the network's rules while the project work is happening, heavy downloads, an unsafe site, the institution has no way of knowing it wasn't actually their own student. Every log, every flag, every fair-use warning lands on the wrong person.
This has been happening quietly for years because there was never an official alternative. Until now.
We just launched Partner Roaming on ISN Free WiFi: a student or staff member can log in at a partnered institution using their own home credentials, safely, without ever handing their password to another person. Their real institution verifies it. Their real account governs it. The next group project doesn't need a single shared password.
And it comes with real control for admins, not just convenience for students.
No open directory. A partnership only exists because one institution generated a connection code and shared it directly with the specific partner they chose, and both sides still had to explicitly accept before any trust was granted.
Every institution sets its own rules for visitors, completely separate from how they treat their own students: data caps by day, week or month, a limit on concurrent devices, speed caps, or unlimited if that's the policy. Either side can pause a partnership without deleting it, and the other side actually sees when that happens. Nothing silent.
Two-way reporting means every institution can see exactly who is visiting from their partners, and where their own students are roaming to.
We even built it to correctly separate two different people at two different institutions who happen to share the same number, email, even password, so nobody's sessions or data can ever get mixed up.
The safest password is the one you never had to give away in the first place.
