Data is the new handshake.
Every time someone connects to WiFi, they're trusting the network with a small piece of themselves: a phone number, a device, a moment of their day.
How that trust gets handled says everything about the platform behind it.
At ISN Free WiFi, we just shipped a feature that puts that principle to the test: Survey-to-Unlock.
Instead of only watching an ad or redeeming a voucher, guests can now answer a short survey to earn free data. Simple on the surface, but underneath it, we built something we're genuinely proud of.
- Every question is screened by AI before it ever reaches a guest, checking for age-appropriate content, blocking anything unsafe, and rejecting ambiguous brand or product mentions until they're properly age-gated. It's a real security layer, not a checkbox.
- Every answer is anonymous. No name, no phone number, no ID number is ever attached to a response. Not to us, not to the venue, not to the business that asked the question.
- Age-restricted questions are hidden automatically from anyone whose age isn't on file. Not "usually." Always.
- Budgets and spend are tracked in real time, with automatic alerts at 75% and 100%, so nothing runs away unnoticed.
This is what POPIA-first design actually looks like in practice: not a clause in a terms page nobody reads, but a system that structurally cannot leak what it was never allowed to collect.
Why this matters for big venues.
For a mall, a stadium, a university campus, or any large multi-tenant space, this isn't just a WiFi perk. It's a market research engine that was previously locked behind expensive surveys and low response rates. A retailer in the mall can ask its own question to its own footfall, in exchange for the data guests already want. Real insight, real consent, zero extra friction for the guest.
Admins and businesses only ever see what they're supposed to: aggregated results, spend tracking, and for a business, only the responses to the questions assigned to them. Never a guest's identity. Never another business's data.
That's the whole point. Powerful for the venue. Invisible risk for the guest.
