Why Your Accommodation WiFi Is Slow (And How ISN Free WiFi Fixes It)

18 August 2026

The real reason your accommodation WiFi is slow isn't your ISP.
ISPs and tenants have fought over slow shared WiFi in properties for years. ISPs insist they're delivering the stable connection they promised, and often they are. The real problem: far more people are connected than the property has tenants.

That means the password is being shared. By whom?
Our research found 90% of the time, it's not the landlord or ISP leaking it. It's tenants sharing it with outsiders.

And here's the loop: even if you change the password, it gets shared again. And again. Forever.

So we broke the loop.
ISN Free WiFi's captive portal supports internal accounts, created by the landlord or ISP, each with its own bandwidth cap, device limit, and personalized credentials per tenant. Now the "main" password gets an outsider nowhere. No credentials, no access. And no single tenant can eat the whole line.

But tenants still have real guests.
So we built optional guest self-registration, switched on by the landlord/ISP. It runs on vouchers, curfew hours, visitor speed caps, and a Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

A random signup gets nothing. A tenant has to generate a voucher and hand it to their guest before that guest unlocks access.
  • Curfew-bound: works until curfew, then freezes. No reuse the next day.
  • Speed-capped: visitors get their own Mbps ceiling, isolated from the tenant's line.
  • FUP: soft mode throttles the resident's vouchers live. Hard mode blocks new vouchers and blocks that visiting device from redeeming anyone's voucher, until next month.

Does FUP limit the visitor or the tenant?
Both. FUP is tied to the visitor's device, not their account, so logging out and signing up again doesn't help. Try a different tenant's voucher instead? The system remembers the device and catches up with it there too. Every guest visiting a limited tenant is affected, until the month resets.

Tenants keep fair internet. Real guests can still connect. Outsiders stop being a problem the landlord has to police manually.
